Amazing film – Glasgow (1982) online
Someone has recently posted a series of four BBC film episodes about Glasgow online. In fact, the series looks much more closely at the East End of Glasgow in particular. Episodes focusing on the ‘blight’ left behind from the mass demolitions of the 1960s and 1970s Comprehensive Development Area (CDA) era; the final closure of the Beardmore’s Forge at Parkhead; the then infamous Barrowfield scheme next to Parkhead; and finally football, culture and sectarianism in and around Bridgeton.
The episodes are available below. Episode 1 ‘Blight’ comes first, with Episode 2 ‘Work’ next, then the Episode 3 ‘The Scheme’, and finally Episode 4 ‘The Bond’. The links to the Episodes 2,3 and 4 can be found above Episode 1 ‘Blight’ on Vimeo. They have been uploaded in such a way that one episode sometimes bleeds into another, but all episodes are viewable in full.
We don’t have to agree with every aspect of the films commentary, but the series is an amazing document of the East End in the early 1980s that provides a really fascinating window into the historical social and environmental problems of the area. For those interested in current ‘regeneration’ plans associated with the Commonwealth Games 2014 and Clyde Gateway it is practically unmissable. Enjoy!
